HC Deb 22 April 1988 vol 131 cc586-7W
Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on recent diplomatic initiatives seeking an end to the civil war in Angola.

Mrs. Chalker

We wish to see all foreign troops withdrawn from Angola, and support the United States-led negotiations as the most practical means of ending the civil war.

Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment he has ma de of the implications for stability in Southern Africa of South Africa's policy towards Angola.

Mrs. Chalker

South Africa's present policy towards Angola contributes to instability in Southern Africa. We have called repeatedly upon South Africa to withdraw its forces from Angola and to respect Angola's territorial integrity.

Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) if he has recently made any approaches to, or received approaches from, the Soviet Union with regard to a peaceful settlement in Angola;

(2) when he last discussed Angola with the Government of the Soviet Union.

Mrs. Chalker

I refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Reigate (Mr. Gardiner) on 2 March.

Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he has recently made any approaches to, or received approaches from the South African Government with regard to a peaceful settlement in Angola.

Mrs. Chalker

We regularly point out to the South African Government the need for a peaceful settlement and for the withdrawal of their troops from Angola.

Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment he has made of the implications for stability in southern Africa of the Soviet Union's policy towards Angola.

Mrs. Chalker

The Soviet Union is well aware of our view that the stability of the region would be significantly improved by a negotiated end to the war in Angola involving the withdrawal of all foreign troops.
