§ Mr. RentonWe have discussions with the broadcasting authorities from time to time on a wide range of issues, including their responsibility for programme standards. In this context, my right hon. Friend met the chairmen of the BBC and IBA on 29 September 1987 in order to discuss the portrayal of violence and sex on television. The broadcasting authorities have issued guidance on these matters, including advice on the timing of programmes and the care which needs to be taken when children and young persons are likely to be viewing.
