§ Mr. Peter BottomleyNone. The Department has given guidance on criteria for speed limits to all highway authorities through circulars roads 1/80 and 4/83. The guidance is advisory but is widely respected and followed. The aim is to achieve realistic speed limits which give a satisfactory balance between safety and the need for fast convenient travel.
