HC Deb 20 April 1988 vol 131 c478W
17. Ms. Quin

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a further statement on progress made towards full implementation of the European Economic Community directives on drinking water and bathing water.

Mr. Ridley

Most public water supplies for which derogations have been sought from the European Commission are expected to comply with the EC drinking water directive by 1990. In addition, I have asked water undertakers in England to review their investment programmes in the light of my statement of 2 December 1987 about a revised interpretation of this directive.

All significant seaside resorts are included within the scope of the bathing water directive. More than half the bathing waters comply with the directive's standards and major improvement schemes are in hand or planned to bring the others up to these standards.
