Mr. O'Brien

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what recent discussions he has had with the Water Authorities Association about the regulation which will apply in the water industry following the privatisation legislation; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moynihan

Pursuant to my answer on 9 March to the hon. Member for Ynys Mon (Mr. Jones) at column 228, the Minister for Environment, Countryside and Water met the chairman of the Water Authorities

Mr. Moynihan

The Montreal protocol contains its own provisions for regular reviews of the control measures on the basis of scientific, environmental, technical and economic information. The first such review will be undertaken in 1990. In the meantime the Department's stratospheric ozone research group is studying all the latest scientific evidence, including that of the ozone trends panel, and will publish an up-to-date assessment in the autumn.
