Mr. David Howell

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what studies he has undertaken or commissioned concerning the design and construction of underground train carriages on the open plan system adopted by the MRT in Singapore.

[holding answer 13 April 1988]: Under the terms of an agency agreement between my Department and the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation, inspecting officers of railways have inspected and carried out safety audits of the Singapore system. These inspections included the rolling stock and, in accordance with the agreement, reports have been made to the board of the MRT Corporation.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will pay an offficial visit to study and report on the design and operation of the MRT subway system in Singapore.

[holding answer 13 April 1988]: I am grateful to my right hon. Friend for drawing my attention to certain crime prevention aspects of coach design, including that of the Singapore MRT system, and when an opportunity presents itself I shall look closely at the open plan feature to which my right hon. Friend has drawn my attention.
