Mr. Janner

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how much has been spent by Her Majesty's Government in each year since 1980(a) directly and (b) through grants to non-Government organisations, on education measures to reduce solvent abuse.

Mrs. Currie

The Government have directly spent the following sums on specific education and information measures designed to inform young people, parents, professional workers and retailers about the problems of solvent misuse.

The Government have also funded drug education coordinators in every local education authority, whose work has included activities aimed at preventing solvent misuse; have funded the Health Education Authority which (as the Health Education Council) produced a leaflet on solvent misuse; and have invested in a major expansion of drug misuse services, some of which offer help to solvent misusers.
