HC Deb 20 April 1988 vol 131 cc449-50W
Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) on what date the club, run by the Berkshire Downs Firearms and Ballistics Company based in Membury when managed by proprietor George Sturm, was first granted Home Office approval; and on what subsequent dates this approval was reviewed and certificates reissued or renewed;

(2) if he will (a) list and (b) place in the Library copies of all relevant documents relating to inquiries made and completed by the Home Office and Thames Valley or other police forces into the applications by the club run by the Berkshire Downs Firearms and Ballistics Company based in Membury when managed by proprietor George Sturm, for consideration for the issue, amendment, addition to, or renewal of, the Home Office approval certificates;

(3) if he will (a) list and (b) place in the Library a copy of all documents submitted in the course of the applications by the club run by the Berkshire Downs Firearms and Ballistics Company based in Membury when managed by proprietor George Sturm, to the police or the Home Office for the issue, amendment, addition to, or renewal of the Home Office approval certificates;

(4) if he will place in the Library a copy of the original Home Office approval certificate for the club run by the Berkshire Downs Firearms and Ballistics Company based in Membury when managed by proprietor George Sturm, and any subsequent amendments or additions to, and renewals of it.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The club was approved for the use of small and full-bore rifles and pistols on 30 April 1986. The approval was withdrawn on 27 May 1987 in the light of information from the Thames Valley police that the club had ceased to operate.

It is not the practice to place such documents in the Library.

Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the chief constable of the Thames Valley police force to establish whether or not the chief constable placed before the coroner, for his consideration prior to or during the inquest into events on 19 August 1987 involving the late Michael Ryan, statements and copy documents provided by the Wiltshire shooting centre and its proprietors.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I understand from the chief constable of Thames Valley that statements and copy documents provided by the Wiltshire shooting centre and its proprietors were placed before the coroner prior to the inquest.

Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will call for a report from the chief constable of the Thames Valley police force listing all the firearms clubs that his inquiries have revealed the late Michael Ryan either visited, applied to join, or joined;

(2) if he will call for a report from the chief constable of the Thames Valley police force listing all the firearms ranges that his inquiries have revealed the late Michael Ryan visited to shoot.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I understand from the chief constable of Thames Valley that Michael Ryan is not known to have visited firearms clubs other than the two of which he was a member.
