To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will take steps to bring the quality of drinking water in England and Wales up to the standard required by the European Economic Community in advance of the date previously given.

[holding answer 19 April 1988]: I welcome any steps being taken by water undertakers to comply with the EC drinking water directive in advance of dates already set.
