Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) pursuant to his parliamentary reply to the right hon. Member for Stoke-on-Trent, South, 25 March,Official Report, column 267, about the A50, if he will name the main roads in urban areas which have all the following : (a) a higher traffic count than on the A50 at the Meir Stoke-on-Trent, (b) a percentage of heavy vehicles of over 19 per cent. and (c) within 5 miles of the point where the traffic count is taken, have only one main lane in each direction and have private housing bordering on to the road;

(2) pursuant to his replies about the A50 to the right hon. Member for Stoke-on-Trent, South, 25 March, Official Report, column 267, which of (a) the roads named as having the highest traffic counts and (b) the roads in the west midlands named as carrying a higher volume of traffic than on the A50 at the Meir Stoke-on-Trent, have a percentage of heavy vehicles greater than the 19 per cent. at the Meir;

(3) pursuant to his answers to the right hon. Member for Stoke-on-Trent, South, 25 March, Official Report, column 267, how many traffic lanes there are at the points where the traffic counts were taken for (a) the A50 at the Meir, Stoke-on-Trent and (b) for those built up roads having the highest traffic count; and if he will express the traffic count figures in terms of traffic per 12 hours per traffic lane;

(4) pursuant to his reply to the right hon. Member for Stoke-on-Trent, South, 25 March, Official Report, column 267, as to the A50, for those parts of the roads within five miles of the point where the traffic count is taken, what is the maximum number of traffic lanes on the (a) A50 at the Meir, in Stoke-on-Trent and (b) roads named as having the highest traffic count; and if he will express the traffic count as the number of vehicles per minimum number of traffic lanes on these roads;

(5) pursuant to the reply to the right hon. Member for Stoke-on-Trent, South on 25 March, Official Report, column 267, how many of the roads in the west midlands conurbation named as carrying higher volumes of traffic than on the A50 at the Meir, Stoke-on-Trent, have, within 5 miles of the point where the traffic count is taken (a) only one main lane in both directions and (b) houses bordering directly on to the road.
