HC Deb 19 April 1988 vol 131 c405W
Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the allotted funding for the surface testing, and treatment when necessary, for all trunk roads and motorways in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

It is estimated that over the first four years of this new approach the cost of surveying and treating the trunk road and motorway network will be £36 million. Thereafter it is estimated that the annual cost of continuing this policy will be approximately £2.5 million per annum. When the standard is fully implemented financial benefits from accident reductions on trunk roads will amount to £35 million a year, representing a return of £5 . 50 for every £1 spent.
