HC Deb 19 April 1988 vol 131 c376W
Mr. Pike

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will indicate the budget provision per health authority on a per capita basis for cervical and breast cancer screening.

Mrs. Currie

Health authorities do not have separate budget allocations for cervical cancer screening. It has been estimated that the average cost of taking and examining a cervical smear is about £10. The allocation given to each regional health authority for the continuing revenue cost of the new breast cancer screening services is based on the financial estimates in the Forrest report and is about £14 per woman screened by mammography including, where necessary, the cost of assessment and diagnosis. Between 1987–88 and 1989–90, on current plans, nearly £55 million will have been provided to set up and run the breast cancer screening service in England.
