HC Deb 18 April 1988 vol 131 cc327-8W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Minister for the Arts if he will make a statement on the decision of his reviewing committee to put a four-month stop on the export of Sir Anthony Van Dyck's portrait of James, 1st Duke of Hamilton.

Mr. Luce

The Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art considered Sir Anthony Van Dyck's portrait of James, 1st Duke of Hamilton, in the context of the Waverley criteria, as it does all items referred to it for consideration. The committee concluded that the portrait satisfied the Waverley criteria and, therefore, recommended a four-month deferral of a decision on the export licence application. It further recommended that if, after one month, no public collection had shown interest in acquiring the portrait, consideration should be given to granting an export licence at that stage.
