HC Deb 18 April 1988 vol 131 cc353-4W
20. Mr. Michael

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he has any plans to seek to increase his enforcement powers in relation to transport safety.

21. Mr. Cummings

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he has any plans to seek to increase his powers to enforce safety standards on foreign companies operating within the United Kingdom.

Mr. Channon

The safe movement of people and goods is one of my top priorities irrespective of whether the operator is British or foreign. Effective enforcement of safety standards is an essential and regular part of that. I keep my powers for this purpose under regular review but have no immediate plans to seek to increase them.

34. Ms. Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make it his policy to provide funding specifically for improvements in transport safety.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Transport safety is one of our main priorities. A large part of the resources the Department provides are directed to maintaining and improving it.

64. Ms. Quinn

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make it his policy that safety should be a higher priority than financial cost in making regulations concerning transport policy.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The main reasons why we make transport regulations are to ensure safety and provide environmental protection. When drawing up regulations, we also take account of convenience and the efficient use of resources.
