§ 62. Mr. CryerTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what recent discussions he has held with local authorities regarding the Settle-Carlisle railway line.
§ Mr. David MitchellLast Wednesday, I received the terms of the local authorities' revised offer of support for the line. I am studying that, and especially the conditions they have attached to their offer.
§ Mr. PikeTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will indicate the main implications for his Department of the feasibility study carried out by John Jarvis and Sons plc of the Settle-Carlisle railway; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. David MitchellThe report by J. Jarvis and Sons described the potential development of tourist projects in the Settle-Carlisle corridor, rather than the future of that railway itself. The tourist potential of the area is one of the aspects I am taking into account in considering the future of the line.
