§ Mr. IrvingTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many prisoners are known to have contracted the AIDS virus while in custody;
(2) how many of those prisoners identified as HIV antibody positive have had VI R restrictions ordered by a medical officer or stamped on their records.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggOn 13 April 1988, the prison population of England and Wales included 58 inmates reported as having been identified as HIV antibody positive; 170 such cases had been reported since central monitoring began in March 1985. There is no evidence that any of the inmates became infected while they were in prison custody. It is likely that once identified, all will have been made subject to viral infectivity restrictions. The nature of the restrictions will have varied from case to case.
