HC Deb 18 April 1988 vol 131 c297W
Mr. Wilson

To ask the Prime Minister if she will list all offices of state to which a disqualification exists on grounds of religion; if she will state in each case the origins of that disqualification; if she will state the denominations and religions excluded from each office; and if she will state the Government's policy towards these prohibitions.

The Prime Minister

The office of Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland may not be held by a Roman Catholic. This disqualification is contained in the Catholic Relief Act 1829, section 12. There are no plans to introduce legislation on this matter.
