To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give the numbers of children in each education authority in England, Scotland and Wales who received free school meals up to April because their parents were in receipt of family income supplement and at the discretion of the education authority, respectively.

In October 1987, the latest date for which information is available, the total number of pupils in England authorised to receive free school meals because their parents were in receipt of family income supplement or at the discretion of the LEA were 128,394 and 115,806 respectively. Details relating to individual authorities are published annually in School Meals Statistics, a copy of which is in the Library of the House. Information in respect of Scotland and Wales is the responsibility of my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Scotland and Wales respectively.
