HC Deb 18 April 1988 vol 131 cc286-7W
Mr. Peter Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) if the anti-AIDS video entitled "Your Choice for Life" was produced with the intention of general exhibition to schoolchildren of secondary school age;

(2) if he will take steps to make available to schools an alternative to the video entitled "Your Choice for Life"; and if he will undertake to include in such a film material stressing the importance of family life from the recent television broadcast entitled "Susie's Story";

(3) if he will make it his policy to ensure that schools choosing to exhibit the anti-AIDS video entitled "Your Choice for Life" give such preparation and follow-up as is necessary to encourage pupils to recognise the effectiveness of chastity before marriage and fidelity within it as the best protection against AIDS;

(4) what steps he has taken to ensure that the contents of his letter accompanying the anti-AIDS video entitled "Your Choice for Life" are known to the teachers concerned in the exhibition of the film.

Mr. Dunn

The video "Your Choice for Life" is designed for pupils aged 14-plus in a supervised setting. The accompanying users' guide for teachers emphasises the importance of follow-up discussion on the family, fidelity and chastity before marriage. Use of the package, and reinforcement of its messages, are matters for individual school's governing bodies, as my right hon. Friend's letter to the chairmen of governors made clear. It is open to governors to adopt alternative or supplementary materials, but the Government themselves have no plans to replace the video.
