To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many people were injured on the roads in 1987.

Too many.

The number of casualties in 1987 is provisionally estimated at 308,000. This is the lowest number recorded in any year since 1958. Motor traffic has increased by 380 per cent. since 1958. The provisional estimate of the number of deaths, at 5,110, is the lowest since 1954. The number of pedestrians killed is the lowest since records began in 1926.
