HC Deb 15 April 1988 vol 131 cc262-3W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what proportion of serious leg injuries sustained by motor cyclists in road traffic accidents result in disability.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

[holding answer 29 March 1988]: Just before Easter, the hon. Gentleman asked what proportion of serious leg injuries sustained by motor cyclists in road traffic accidents resulted in disabilities. The information was not available at the time. I said that I would write.

A transport and road research laboratory study at a hospital accident and emergency department showed that about half of motor cyclists sustaining serious leg injuries were still suffering disability six months after their accident. As this study was at one hospital only, this figure may not be representative of the national situation.
