HC Deb 14 April 1988 vol 131 c234W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he will break down the total business sponsorship of sport in 1986–87 by each sport;

(2) what are the latest estimates of total business sponsorship of sport in the years 1985–86, 1986–87 and 1987–88; and if he will give a detailed breakdown of how these estimates were made.

Mr. Moynihan

The Sports Council's estimates of national business sponsorship of sport, by calendar years, are as follows:

£ million
1985 128
1986 146
1987 164

These estimates are derived from coverage in the press and television and other sources monitored by the Sports Council. They do not include local sponsorship, for which no estimates are available and are therefore likely to understate the true extent of sports sponsorship. They cannot conveniently be broken down into estimates for individual sports.
