HL Deb 12 April 1988 vol 495 cc1054-5WA
Lord Brougham and Vaux

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When they expect to publish the report of the North review.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Transport (Lord Brabazon of Tara)

My right honourable friends the Secretary of State for the Home Department and the Secretary of State for Transport have today published the report of the road traffic law review which has been carried out under the chairmanship of Dr. Peter North, the principal of Jesus College, Oxford. Dr. North's terms of reference asked him to examine ways of making the law simpler, more effective and more acceptable. The Government are grateful for the wide range of constructive proposals which the report contains and welcome its concentration on ways to reduce the number of accidents and the casualties, damage and misery which they cause. The many organisations consulted during the review will wish to study its recommendations in their final form. The Government will want to take account of their views. Meanwhile, we shall press on with our own consideration of the report, and will report to the House on our progress before the Summer Recess. Copies of the report have been placed in the Library.
