§ Mr. FauldsTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether Her Majesty's Government will launch an initiative to bring about a negotiated settlement of the conflict in the western Sahara between the Polisario and the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco.
§ Mr. MellorNo. We believe that the dispute is one for the people of the region to resolve. We support the mediation efforts of the United Nations Secretary General and have welcomed his initiative in sending a technical mission to the region.
§ Mr. FauldsTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs why, in the light of Her Majesty's Government's neutrality in the western Sahara, permission for the supply of military equipment for the armed forces of the Kingdom of Morocco continues to be given.
§ Mr. MellorOur policy of strict impartiality over the western Sahara dispute does not preclude the sale of conventional military equipment to friendly Governments in the region.
