§ Mr. Wrayasked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he will detail resources needed to bring up to the required standards the sewage systems in the whole of the United Kingdom;
(2) what plans he has to tackle the crisis in British sewage systems in the event of privatisation of water authorities.
§ Mr. MoynihanThe regional water authorities are spending enough on the renewal and replacement of their sewerage and other assets to maintain the integrity of these systems and to improve the performance and quality of their services. In 1986–87 their capital expenditure on sewerage and sewage treatment and disposal was £465 million, 25 per cent. more than in 1980–81 in volume terms.
Water services in other parts of the United Kingdom are a matter for the Secretaries of State concerned.
