§ Mr. MellorThe Iraqis can be in no doubt of our condemnation of the use of these weapons. We have raised the question on a number of occasions recently, for instance when my right hon. and learned Friend the Foreign Secretary met the Iraqi Foreign Minister in New York, and during the new Iraqi ambassador's introductory calls at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

§ Mr. MellorWe raise at every suitable opportunity the deplorable use of chemical weapons by Iraq. We strongly supported the statement by the president of the Security Council on 14 May, demanding a halt to the use of their weapons in accordance with the 1925 Geneva protocol. We played a leading role in obtaining SCR 598 which deplores, inter alia, the use of chemical weapons in the conflict.
