HC Deb 26 October 1987 vol 121 c9W
Mr. Wray

asked the Prime Minister what steps Her Majesty's Government are taking to seek to increase voting during general and local elections and to reduce the number of abstentions.

The Prime Minister

It is up to each elector to decide whether or not to vote. The Government are committed to ensuring that the arrangements for elections enable electors to exercise their right to vote. We have extended the right to vote in parliamentary, European Parliament and local government elections to holidaymakers and others unable to vote in person.
