HL Deb 26 October 1987 vol 489 c406WA
Lord Houghton of Sowerby

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the present position reached in their consideration of reforms in the taxation of husbands and wives following the publication of Cmnd. 9756 in March 1986.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

We announced in March this year that we had decided not to go ahead at this stage with the system of independent taxation with transferable tax allowances described in last year's Green Paper,The Reform of Personal Taxation (Cmnd. 9756). The Government are now considering whether there is a satisfactory halfway house to the approach in the Green Paper.
