asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will estimate the levels of overcrowding in Perth, Inverness and Barlinnie prisons.

As at lock-up on Tuesday 20 October 1987, the position was as follows:

All penal establishments in Scotland 5,409 15,598 23
1 Some places at Perth prison, and other prisons, are temporarily out of use because of damage by inmates in recent incidents.
2 Places vacant.
3 Overcrowded.
