HC Deb 26 October 1987 vol 121 c47W
Mr. Wray

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what progress has lately been achieved in obliging the Government of South Africa to cease the occupation of Namibia; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Chalker

The United Nations Secretary General and United States Administration are engaged in continuing negotiations for the implementation of the United Nations plan. We support their efforts.

Mr. Wray

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if Her Majesty's Government will take steps in order to seek to put a stop to the reported damage to Namibian natural resources by British companies.

Mrs. Chalker

We do not intervene in the operation of British companies in Namibia. We have no reason to believe that they are behaving irresponsibly. In contrast, considerable damage is being caused to Namibia's natural resources by Soviet and East European over-fishing.
