HC Deb 26 October 1987 vol 121 cc164-5W
Mr. Wray

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information is available to him on the minimum of personnel needed in each hospital for cleansing and maintenance operations.

Mr. Newton

The staffing levels required for such services are a matter for those responsible for providing them.

Mr. Wray

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what (a) medical and (b) other specialised advice is given to private contractors for the cleaning and maintenance of National Health Service installations and equipment.

Mr. Newton

This is a matter for health authorities who, before awarding contracts, have to satisfy themselves about contractors' competence to meet the detailed specifications set out in tender documents. These specifications include details of any special procedures, requirements or policies which apply to the service under contract.

Mr. Wray

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what penalties are imposed on private contractors in charge of the cleaning and maintenance of National Health Service installations who have been found to provide deficient services.

Mr. Newton

This is a matter for health authorities. Normally when putting such services out to tender an authority will include in the contract documents detailed specifications of the service required of the contractor and the action to be taken should the contractor fail to meet the specifications.
