HC Deb 26 October 1987 vol 121 cc29-30W
Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether any special arrangements have been made for compensation and restoration in relation to any damage arising from Exercise Purple Warrior.

Mr. Ian Stewart

Yes. In view of the scale of Exercise Purple Warrior, arrangements are being made to ensure that damage repair units and suitably qualified claims assessors will be on hand throughout the exercise period. They will either carry out any necessary repairs, or discuss the arrangements for any necessary compensation, as rapidly and effectively as possible.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what are the arrangements for monitoring of Exercise Purple Warrior by United Kingdom civil authorities.

Mr. Ian Stewart

There are no arrangements for Exercise Purple Warrior to be monitored by civil authorities and no request for such arrangements has been received, although those authorities most closely involved in the exercise have been fully consulted in the course of exercise planning. Should problems arise which require further consultations with them, these will, of course, take place.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make it his policy that the south-west of Scotland will not be used for further major exercises after Exercise Purple Warrior.

Mr. Ian Stewart

No. South-west Scotland will continue to be one of the areas which we will use for military training. However, it is unlikely that another exercise on the scale of Exercise Purple Warrior will be carried out for some years in the same area.
