HC Deb 26 October 1987 vol 121 c56W
Mr. David Marshall

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what plans he has to provide work for British Rail Engineering Ltd. over the next 12 months.

Mr. David Mitchell

The amount of work secured by BREL is (as with most businesses) dependant on how successful they are in competing for whatever business is available. The British Railways Board plans to spend £1 billion on locomotives and rolling stock over the next five years. This provides the opportunity for substantial business for the railway supply industry although inevitably this will mean less heavy maintenance work. The Government will continue to support BREL's export efforts.
