asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on his recent visit to Liverpool.

My right hon. Friend visited Liverpool on 4 August 1987.

In the morning he was given a tour of inner Liverpool, and then had discussions with the former leader of Liverpool city council, Councillor Harry Rimmer, and officials, followed by a press conference.

In the afternoon he toured the Albert dock and held discussions with the chairman and chief officers of Merseyside development corporation.

The Secretary of State then had a meeting with the Archbishop of Liverpool before returning to London after a political engagement.
