HL Deb 22 October 1987 vol 489 c305WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will take more effective steps to influence the Turkish Government's record on human rights, including proposing the ejection of Turkey from the Council of Europe, the reduction of its NATO membership to associate status and the discouragement of trade and tourism until necessary reforms have been made.

The Minister of State for Defence Procurement (Lord Trefgarne)

We take every opportunity to raise our concerns about allegations of human rights abuses with the Government of Turkey, an important NATO ally. We believe our pressure has been effective in influencing that Government to maintain their commitment to restoring full democracy and respect for human rights. We do not intend to take any of the steps proposed by the noble Lord.
