Mrs. Currie

[holding answer 24 November 1987]: My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Energy has announced plans which will result in increases in electricity prices over a two-year period beginning in April 1988. On the basis of past patterns of supply we estimate that the cost to all health authorities in the financial year 1988–89 will be in the order of £8 million.

Health authorities are major users of electricity, together with the National Health Service Procurement Directorate, and in negotiation with electricity boards and the Electricity Council, they will continue to ensure their considerable investment represents good value for money.
