HC Deb 24 November 1987 vol 123 c101W
Mr. Andrew Mitchell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information he has on the plight of the Baha'i community in Iran; if he will make representations to the Government of Iran on this matter; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Eggar

The continued persecution of the Baha'i community in Iran remains a cause of grave concern to us.

For the last five years we have co-sponsored the resolution on human rights in Iran at the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR). These resolutions urged the Iranian Government to respect the human rights standards set out in the instruments to which they are a party. We will continue to raise the issue of the persecution of the Baha'is and other religious minorities in Iran at every suitable opportunity — bilaterally, in concert with our European partners and at the United Nations.
