§ 24. Mr. John CarlisleTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will consider recommending to the European Commission that only bread-making wheat be eligible for intervention storage.
§ Mr. MacGregorRestricting access to intervention to bread-making wheat would not be in the interest of United Kingdom producers, since, for technical reasons, bread-making varieties normally grown in this country rarely meet all the criteria for bread-making wheat set in Community regulations. Moreover, the removal of all support for feed wheat would lead to distortions in the feed grain market and could stimulate the production of barley, for which outlets tend to be limited, at the expense of feedwheat, for which there is demand both at home and abroad.
