HC Deb 17 November 1987 vol 122 cc480-1W
Mr. Campbell-Savours

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what seismic movements have occurred in the area of west Cumbria in the last two months.

Mr. Moynihan

Seismic monitoring equipment operated by the British geological survey has detected one small seismic event in western Cumbria and its offshore area in the last two months. It occurred on 9 November with a magnitude of about 2.5 Richter and was felt on the Isle of Man. During October a number of other tremors were detected by instruments, but these are believed to have been caused by man-made disturbances such as sonic booms. Data processing for the period is not yet complete and further information may become available.
