To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the annual cost of student grants; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Jackson

In the 1985–86 academic year, the latest year for which information is available, total expenditure on mandatory awards by local education authorities in England and Wales was £700 million. This figure includes £458 million for maintenance and £242 million for fees.
