HC Deb 17 November 1987 vol 122 c527W
Mr. Speller

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representation she has received about the dumping of sewage in the Bristol channel adjacent to the beaches of north Devon.

Mr. Gummer

Representations have been received from Lynton and Lynemouth town council, Ilfracombe town council and Combe Martin parish council about the sea disposal of sewage sludge, the residue from sewage treatment, which takes place some 11 miles north of Ilfracombe. Scientific surveillance by my Department suggests that these operations are unlikely to have any significant effect on the quality of the north Devon beaches.

Mr. Pike

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many sewage sludge dump sites there are along the United Kingdom coast.

Mr. Gummer

Fifteen such sites are in regular use and three reserve sites are used occasionally in rough weather.
