HC Deb 17 November 1987 vol 122 cc464-6W
Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what estimates have been made by his Department of the economic impact of the location of its establishments on United Kingdom regional policy; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Sainsbury

Whilst we aim to, secure a more even spread of defence employment across the regions, decisions on all proposals affecting the future of defence establishments must be made on their own economic and operational merits.

Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list the number of defence establishments together with the number of staff, including regular service men, employed in each English and Welsh county.

Mr. Sainsbury

Details on the number of defence establishments located in each county are not available centrally and could not be obtained without disproportionate cost and effort. The table shows the number of staff, both civilian (full-time equivalent) and service, employed or deployed in each county at 1 July 1987.
