HC Deb 17 November 1987 vol 122 c464W
Mr. Gregory

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what results there are to date following the introduction of the crown hotel classification scheme in each category ; how many hotels have failed to meet the specifications; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

According to the Wales tourist board, the information as at 1 November 1987 is as follows:

Category Number
Listed 121
1 Crown 40
2 Crowns 306
3 Crowns 273
4 Crowns 167
5 Crowns 28
Awaiting visit 29
964

An additional 54 hotels have failed to meet the criteria for registration.

The Wales tourist board, in conjunction with the English tourist board, proposes consulting the industry about improvements to the scheme, including an element of qualitative assessment. A consultation document outlining a range of options for the future development of the scheme is being prepared for discussion. It is planned that decisions will be taken next spring.
