HC Deb 17 November 1987 vol 122 cc479-80W
Mr. Fraser

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will introduce legislation to bring the destruction of hedgerows and stone walls under planning control.

Mr. Moynihan

The Government have no plans to make removal of hedgerows and stone walls subject to development control, which would not be an appropriate way of protecting them. Instead, the retention of these features of the landscape is encouraged by making grants available from the Countryside Commission for re-planting or reinstatement, and from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for hedge planting and laying, and for the erection of traditional stone walls.
