Mr. Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what has been the total expenditure made by his Department in each of the last five years on payments to residents in(a) residential homes and (b) nursing homes.

Mr. Portillo

The only benefit payable to people in residential care and nursing homes for which there is information on total expenditure is supplementary benefit. The table sets out the position for the last five years., 1986 being the most recent year for which information is available.
