HC Deb 12 November 1987 vol 122 cc283-4W
Mr. Pike

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services when he expects to receive a report from the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council into respiratory disease in textile workers.

Mr. Scott

I understand that the council is still considering the evidence it has received on this subject. I cannot say when its report will be produced.

Mr. Pike

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he has any proposals to classify bronchitis and emphysema as industrial diseases.

Mr. Scott

No. The Secretary of State for Social Services is advised on the prescription of industrial diseases by an independent statutory body, the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council. The council has conducted an investigation into bronchitis and emphysema and its report is expected by the end of the year. We shall give careful consideration to any recommendations it may make.
