To ask the Prime Minister how many civil servants were employed in, and what was the cost of, No. 10 Downing street in October 1979, October 1983 and October 1987.

The Prime Minister

1 These figures do not include posts which appear on the complement of other Departments.
2 Salaries and wages, notional pension liability and administration costs and the grant-in-aid to the Chequers Trust are included. The costs of office services attributed to 10 Downing street are included for 1987–88. My salary as Prime Minister is excluded.
3 These costs are not on a consistent basis. I therefore refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Newham, North-West (Mr. Banks) on 23 February, at colums 53–54 for an explanation of the changes in the calculation of the costs of No. 10 since 1979.
