HC Deb 10 November 1987 vol 122 c165W
37. Mr. Grocott

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many civilian jobs have been lost as a result of the contractorisation of defence services.

Mr. Sainsbury

Between 1 April 1979 and 31 March 1987, the number of United Kingdom-based civilians employed by the Department fell by 9,101 as a result of work transferred to contract. It is not possible to determine the extent of any job losses, as the number of staff employed to perform tasks which have been contracted-out is a matter for individual contractors to decide.
