HC Deb 09 November 1987 vol 122 c50W
Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment whether he is currently considering any schemes for the repair and development of the Settle to Carlisle railway using funds from the Manpower Services Commission and workers on community programme schemes; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lee

J. Jarvis and Sons plc has been invited to conduct a feasibility study on the Settle-Carlisle corridor to consider its employment, training and enterprise potential and, if appropriate, to identify a range of self-contained projects which could be undertaken using the community programme. The Manpower Services Commission has contributed £5,000 towards the cost of the study and the completed report is expected by the end of January 1988.
