§ Mr. Peter BottomleyThe White Paper "Policy for Roads in England 1987" (Cm. 125) lists over 30 major trunk road improvement schemes in London with an estimated cost of about £1 billion. This includes about £600 million for improving the road system around docklands and in east London. Other major priorities are completing comprehensive improvement of the North Circular road and the A40 Western avenue.
My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Transport opened the A20 Sidcup bypass last week. The A406 south Woodford-Barking relief road and the Rochester way relief road are due to be completed early next year.
We are about to begin work on the second stage of the four London assessment studies.
80WA number of other studies are in hand, including a review of low cost, high value schemes with emphasis on accident prevention.
London boroughs are carrying out 30 major local road schemes costing over £300 million supported by transport supplementary grant, including seven new schemes costing £60 million added this year.
